Call for papers for thematic issue Language, Sex and Gender

Gender a výzkum / Gender and Research is announcing a call for papers for its thematic issue Language, Sex and Gender. Jana Valdrová and Vít Kolek are the guest editors of this issue.

Language is a social construct and as such it always reflects, legitimises, controls, and (re)produces the existing conditions in a society and the relations between the sexes. It is through language that meanings are formulated, negotiated, and collide. Gender linguistics is the subdiscipline of sociolinguistics that examines the relationship between language, sex, and gender, and the related field of queer linguistics exposes and criticises heteronormative ideas that are transmitted through language.

This thematic issue is being prepared at a time of heightened interest in feminist, gender, and queer topics in linguistics among the general public and scholars. Evidence of this increase in interest is the number of studies on the subject of language and gender in the databases of (Czech) universities, attendance at seminars on the subject of identities, and an increased sensitivity among the public to gendered language stereotypes. Analyses of speech interactions have shed light on the genderedness of communicative acts and the linguistic devices of control and on the role of language in the reproduction of gender inequalities. At every level of the life of society a critical perspective is applied to generic masculinity and linguistic stereotypes. Unprecedented progress has also been observed in the linguistic visibility of women. Gender-inclusive forms of expression are now being employed in the texts and discourse of various institutions, such as schools, municipalities, political parties, LGBT+ groups, and translation and interpretation work are being examined from the perspective of non-binary identities. Rules are also developing on the usage of language relating to non-binary identities.

This thematic issue seeks to present papers in the field of gender and queer linguistics by scholars from various European countries and a variety of fields. We welcome submissions on a wide range of topics that reflect the interaction between gender as a basic socialisation factor and language as a hierarchising instrument of power or, conversely, as a tool for achieving equality. The editors welcome both articles devoted to theory and articles with a methodological or empirical focus. They also invite submissions of book reviews and news related to this theme.

Articles for publication in this thematic issue must be submitted no later than 15 February 2022. They will then undergo peer review. Submit your article through the online submissions system. If you are interested in publishing in the special issue, please consult the topic with the editorial team: jana.valdrova[at]gmail.com and vit.kolek[at]upol.cz. In the letter that accompanies the submission please indicate the special issue ‘Language, Sex and Gender’. Articles in Czech, Slovak, and English are welcomed and should adhere to the language guidelines for publication in the journal (available here).
